Contemporary Facelift, Renovation & Alterations - Completed 2023

The existing two storey detached Victorian house had previously been extended to the side to accommodate an extremely cold and narrow galley kitchen and family bathroom. The separate dining room felt dark and disconnected from the garden that wrapped around the side of the kitchen and the only bathroom was located on the ground floor leaving no space for utility facilities. The entrance porched had been enclosed blocking daylight and views out of the entrance hall.

Our design included removing the load bearing wall and chimney breast between the kitchen and dining room and vaulting the extension ceiling. This in turned allowed for a raked window to be installed to one end maximise the view out into the deepest part of the garden as well as a roof window to bring daylight into the darkest part of the kitchen. The new kitchen is now wider and brighter and includes a breakfast bar off a new set of sliding doors to the garden. These simple alterations vastly improved views in and out of the garden as well the amount of daylight that could be enjoyed in the new open plan kitchen. The ground floor bathroom was relocated to the first floor freeing up space for a utility room accessed off the kitchen.

The existing side extension was given a facelift with a new highly insulated slate pitched roof and Shou Sugi Ban style charred Siberian larch timber cladding and oak wood window reveals to complement the existing materials and contrast against the garden greenery. The front entrance porch was opened up to enlarged to entrance hall and allow more light to flood in through new full height windows.

The result is a light filled family friendly open plan kitchen dining room and entrance hall with a vastly improved connection to the wraparound garden and increased kerb appeal.

Planning permission was granted in September 2021 after which the owners took over the project, managing and building most of the project themselves together with their builder.
